Hailu Mergia, Tony Buck & Mike Majkowski / Jerusalem in My Heart / Razen

After a recent re-release on the label Awesome Tapes From Africa, the Ethiopian accordionist, keyboard player and composer Hailu Mergia comes to Netwerk with drummer Tony Buck (The Necks) and double bassist Mike Majkowski for a unique concert full of fierce Ethio-jazz!

Since the 70’s Hailu Mergia has garnered fame as keyboardist and frontman of the legendary Ethio-jazz and Ethio-funk Walias Band. Their song Musicawi Silt is considered a true Ethiopian classic.

In 1985 – after moving to the United States – he released the visionary cassette Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument, in a nostalgic attempt to bring the accordion sound of his youth back to life. By adding analogue synths, electric piano and drum machine, he brought about an entirely new and modern experience of Ethiopian music.

After the reissue of Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument in 2013, Awesome Tapes From Africa will also re-release, the coveted instrumental album, Tche Belew by Hailu Mergia and The Walias on October 14, just in time for the concert in Netwerk.

In 2013 Constellation released the Jerusalem In My Heart album, Mo7it Al-Mo7it. This audio-visual project from Montreal, involving the Lebanese producer / musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, mixes contemporary experimental Arab music with multi-screen projected 16mm film. A setting that when seen live comes into its own. No two shows are identical, and that’s how we like it.

Razen is Brecht Ameel and Kim Delcour. They blend together a passion for ethnic esotericism and medieval music. A Brussels jam / drone duo with obsessive traits and quirky – not everyday – instruments of choice, or might you be familiar with a santoor, bombus, psalter, schalmei and ondes-martenot? Razen rests at the crossroads of cultures, without the need rush into any one direction. Their new album from Kraak is coming out soon and for their concert in Netwerk they are forming a trio, or perhaps if we are lucky, a quartet.
