Sunny Side Up 2016

President Bongo & The Emotional Carpenters / The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band / Original Paradise Bangkok dj’s / ...

Once again Netwerk celebrates the start of summer and the end of a fascinating exhibition period with the annual outdoor event, Sunny Side Up:

a healthy dose of art, danceable live music, fierce DJ’s, exciting activities, guided tours, good food and fresh cocktails.

Thus we embark merrily into summer!

President Bongo & The Emotional Carpenters

22:30 – 23:30
Fans of the Icelandic collective GusGus are certainly well catered for during Sunny Side Up. Former member and co-founder of the band, Stephan Stephens, aka President Bongo, tonight takes you on an epic, dizzying trip to the Serengeti Plain in Africa, including fluorescent visuals.
Last spring, after some 20 years in GusGus, Stephens left the collective to focus completely on his solo career.

Performing live he invites The Emotional Carpenters on stage: davíð þór jónsson, helgi svavar helgason, omar guðjonsson and sigtryggur baldursson.

A short impression from the most recent Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik can be found here.

The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band

21:00 – 22:00 + 18:00 acoustic set
21st Century Molam for those who love a touch of spice! The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band brings Molam, or deliciously irresistible Thai party music from the 60’s and 70’s, with a groovy contemporary makeover.

For several years there has been a revival of psychedelic Thai music. The hip labels Soundway (The Sound of Siam: Volume 1 & 2) and Finders Keepers (Tai? Dai!) released surprising and versatile compilations with Thai music from the 60’s and 70’s that have received international attention. The compilers of the two compilations, DJ’s Maft Sai and Chris Menist, have been organising the famous Paradise Bangkok nights since 2009, events full of Molam and global beats which, within a few years time, have conquered the whole world. This has suddenly given this timeless party music (a mix of surf, funk, dance and Thai songs) once again the attention it deserves and sent The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band – let’s say their own in-house band – to touring again.

Musicians: the spry 74-year-old Sawai Kaewsombat on khaen (mouth organ) and Kammao Perdtanon or the “Jimi Hendrix of Phin” (Thai lute). These two icons of Molam music (from the impoverished Isan region) are assisted in the rhythm section by young Thai power.

Viaggio in Italia

17:00 – 18:00
Of all the Belgian opponents in the European Championship Italy surely has the most delicious cuisine – unless you prefer Köttbullar or Irish Stew. Viaggio in Italia takes you to the land of La Dolce Vita and La Grande Bellezza, with its musica tradizionale and cinema italiano. Best to experience with a nice glass of prosecco and some antipasti, as consolation for the painfull victory by the Azzurri. With Emanuele Scataglini Renato Spadari and Barbara Rosenberg.

The Original Paradise Bangkok dj’s

23:30 – 01:00
With the Original Paradise Bangkok DJ’s (either DJ Maft Sai or DJ Chris Menist) you find yourself directly in the streets of Bangkok full with the delicious grooves of vintage Asian music.

Maft Sai is the man behind the Zudrangma label’s annex music store and specialises in vintage Thai funk, Molam and Luk Thung. With his Isan Dancehall evenings he now spins internationally. Besides these Thai music styles, he also has a significant collection of Asian and African vintage music. Chris Menist is also a crate-digger and introduced such great compilations as Dust to Digital (Raw 45’s from Yemen) and Finders Keepers (Sounds of Wonder). Along with Sai Maft he has realised, Thai? Dai! – The Heavier Side of The Luk Thung Underground and two volumes of The Sound of Siam. They also contributed, Thonghuad Faited, for Japanese EM Records.
