NOCTUARY

Renée Lorie

Noctuary – the first publication of Renée Lorie (Belgium, 1989), a Brussels based photographer – is a photografic journey into undefined landscapes and interiors. The black and white photographs are full of magical moments, uncertain feelings and surreal light. With an accompanying text on the young oeuvre of the artist by Steven Humblet.

To accompany the publication Lorie created an exhibition within the surroundings of Netwerk Fabriek.
Noctuary – the exhibition – examines the spacial possibilities of the photographic work in the book.
The book and the exhibition are a reflection on the idea of the impossibility to capture life in photography.
According to Roland Barthes, taking a photograph doesn’t involve recording a moment in time (i.e. preserving this moment for eternity, as numerous publicity slogans promise us), but precisely bidding farewell.
