The Neighbours

The Neighbours is a working group of artists, writers, researchers, organisations and local residents. Together, we follow the thinking and actions of artists and collectives. We invite The Neighbours to take part in conversations and to make a programme together. The project last for three years, from 2023 to 2025, allowing enough time to tailor the programme to the needs of the neighbourhood, the art world and one’s own (artistic) work.

In 2023, The Neighbours follows the artistic practices of Bebe Books (BE), Guy Woueté (CM), Kunstenplatform PLAN B (BE), Olivier Marboeuf (FR), Pauline Curnier Jardin (FR), Saddie Choua (BE, MA).

The Neighbours gathered for the first time on Thursday 16 February. They got to know each other and Netwerk Aalst, engaged in a conversation about Joy led by Maureen Duru (The Foodbridge), discovered Aalst and passed by the carnival halls and the library Utopia. Followed by a karaoke session with Bebe Books. The day ended nicely with some neighbourly love and dinner.

The participants of the first gathering were Adriana Barçenas, Bebe Books, Björn Van Heddegem, Griserda Soriano, Guy Woueté, Kristina Melikyan, Kunstenplatform PLAN B, Maureen Duru, Melissa Mabesoone, Musto Al Amo, Netwerk Aalst, Olivier Marboeuf, Roger D’Hont, Saddie Choua. Musto Al Amo made a video, watch it here. Kristina Melikyan wrote an article that will be soon be published online.
